Learn how to make baked sweet potatoes in your air fryer in no time! They’re perfectly soft and tender on the inside with a crispy and delicious skin. Plus, it’s so much quicker than the oven method! Make it a loaded potato or enjoy plain!
Sweet potatoes are most popular in the fall and winter seasons, but with year-round availability at the grocery store, you can enjoy these all year long.

Ingredients
All you NEED is sweet potatoes, and the oil is completely optional.
- Choose sweet potatoes that are long and narrow. Don’t use ones that are too wide, as they will take longer to cook, and the skins will get very brown.
- If possible, use sweet potatoes that are approx. 6-7 inches in length and 2-3 inches wide, or similar.
- For oil free, just skip it, and reduce the heat as indicated in the recipe card below.
Instructions

Begin by scrubbing your potatoes clean and then pricking all over with a fork or knife. (photo 1)
OPTIONAL: Brush the potato with oil. (photo 2)
Air fry your sweet potatoes for 20-35 minutes until easily pierced with a fork. Cook time will vary according to potato size. (photos 3-4)
Serve your potatoes plain, or load them up with sour cream, diced tomatoes and fresh herbs.
Variations
Here are some fun ways to load up your sweet potatoes.
- Pizza – top with marinara sauce, mozzarella, and your favourite toppings!
- Mexican – pour on some chili and top with avocado slices and lime wedges.
- Breakfast – if you’re craving PB + J, top your sweet potato with creamy peanut butter and strawberry jam. You can even add sliced bananas and berries.
- Thai – top with this peanutty slaw, crushed peanuts and lime wedges.
- Dessert – sprinkle some granola and chopped pecans and drizzle with maple syruip.

Equipment
We use a Ninja Foodi 8 quart but ANY model of air fryer will work for this recipe.
Note that individual models will cook at different temperatures and speeds, so be sure to check on your potatoes often, towards the end of cooking.
Storage
Leftovers keep refrigerated in a sealed container for 3-4 days.
I enjoy eating leftover sweet potatoes cold out of the fridge, but you may reheat if preferred.
To freeze, let them cool and then wrap tightly in plastic wrap, followed by foil and freeze for up to 6 months. Or use freezer safe zip-top bags, pushing out as much air as possible, before sealing.
Top tip
Don’t forget to prick holes into your potatoes before air frying! The holes prevent your potatoes from bursting in spots.

Optional Toppings

Instructions
- Scrub your potatoes clean, then use a fork or knife to prick them all over. This will prevent the potatoes from bursting in spots while air frying.
To cook with the optional oil
- Use a silicone brush or your hands to spread the oil over the surface of your potatoes and then air fry at 400 degrees F for 20-30 minutes, until soft and a fork easily pierces the potato.
For oil free
- Air fry the potatoes at 350 degrees F for 25-35 minutes, until soft and easily pierced with a fork. Using a lower temperature without the oil, prevents the skin from burning before the inside has a chance to cook through.
