Golden, crispy, and delicious air fryer potatoes and onions make an ideal side dish that you can have ready in just 30 minutes, or less.

Air fried onions and potatoes in white serving dish.

You can never go wrong with potatoes, and this simple dish is perfect for all sorts of eaters.

It’s naturally vegan and vegetarian, gluten-free, and allergen-friendly.

This dish is inspired by my air-fried home fries, but this time, using thinly sliced potatoes.

    Ingredients + Substitutions

Here’s what you’ll need to make this air fryer potatoes and onions recipe.

Bowls of sliced potatoes, sliced onions, spices and broth on countertop.
    See recipe card for quantities.
    • Potatoes: I chose russet potatoes for this one, but other varieties (like Yukon gold potatoes or red potatoes) work too. You’ll need 1 pound, or approx. 3 small/medium or 2 large potatoes. I keep the skins on, but if you prefer peeling them, that works too.
    • Onions: I like yellow onions, but other varieties also work. Keep them sliced thicker so they don’t burn while the potatoes are cooking.
    • Broth: Use broth to keep the recipe virtually fat-free, or substitute with oil if you prefer.
    • Spices: The original recipe calls for garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. But check out our other variations below to spice things up.

    Instructions

(This is a summary with step by step photos, full recipe measurements and instructions are in the recipe card below.)

Mixing bowl with sliced potatoes and onions with spices on top.

Add the sliced potatoes, onions, broth, and spices to a mixing bowl and toss well to evenly coat.

Raw onions and potatoes inside air fryer basket.

Transfer to your air fryer basket and air fry until fork tender and desired doneness is reached.

Serve immediately with a sprinkle of fresh herbs if you’d like and enjoy.

Air fried onions and potatoes in white serving dish with parsley on top.

    Variations

    Want to spice things up?

Try one of the below seasoning combinations.

    • Smoky BBQ: Use 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and ¼ teaspoon of each garlic powder, salt, and cayenne.
    • Ranch blend: Use ½ teaspoon of parsley and ¼ teaspoon each of dill, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
    • Jerk seasoning: Use ½ teaspoon onion powder and ¼ teaspoon each of thyme, allspice, black pepper, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, salt, and garlic powder.
    • Chili lime: Use 1 teaspoon of chili powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt.
    • Italian: Use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of dried parsley, and ¼ teaspoon each of dried oregano and salt.
    • Cajun blend: Use ¼ teaspoon each of salt, oregano, paprika, cayenne, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
    • Chili seasoning: Use ½ teaspoon of chili powder and ¼ teaspoon each of cumin, garlic powder, paprika (or smoked paprika), onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

    Equipment

We use a Ninja Foodi 8 quart but any model of fryer will work for this recipe, including toaster oven styles.

Just note that different models will cook at different speeds, so always check on your food while air frying.

    Storage

These air-fried potatoes and onions taste best when freshly made but you may store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days and reheat in your fryer, oven, or toaster oven.

    I don’t recommend freezing.

    Expert Tips

    • Cut your potatoes as evenly as possible for even cooking and crispiness.
    • The air frying model and potato thickness will determine cook time, so watch carefully toward the end of cooking.
    • For crispier potatoes, you may use a good quality oil such as avocado oil, instead of broth, but this will increase the calories and fat. (I don’t recommend cooking with olive oil due to its low smoke point.)

    Instructions

    • Scrub and slice the potatoes very thin, using a mandolin or another slicing tool, approx. ⅛" thick. Keep the onions sliced thicker since they cook faster.
    • Mix the sliced potatoes, onions, broth, and seasoning in a large bowl until evenly coated. Then transfer everything to your fryer basket.
    • Air fry the potatoes and onions at 400℉/204℃ for approx. 20 minutes, and stir or shake the basket every 5 minutes, until the desired doneness is reached. Serve hot with freshly chopped parsley or basil if you'd like.
