Ingredients + Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need to make this delicious chocolate bliss balls recipe.
- Black beans: Beans make up the base of these energy bites, keeping this recipe nut-free, but still protein-dense.
- Dates: Choose pitted dates, or use Medjool dates and remove the pits.
- Cocoa powder: Choose unsweetened cocoa powder for its chocolate flavour, while keeping these refined sugar-free.
- Oats: Use rolled oats, and not steel-cut oats since we’re not baking this treat.
- Chocolate chips: While the chocolate chips are optional, they are highly recommended for added chocolatey goodness and delicious texture.
Instructions
(This is a summary with step by step photos, full recipe measurements and instructions are in the recipe card below.)
Add the dates, oats, black beans, and raw cacao powder to your food processor.
Process until mostly smooth, and then add the chocolate chips and pulse a few times to mix them through.
Roll the mixture into balls and if you’d like, you can squeeze a few extra chocolate chips into each ball as you roll them. Enjoy!
Equipment
I use this Cusinart food processor to make these chocolate energy balls.
You MAY use a blender if you don’t have a food processor. However, I find it easier to transfer the mixture from a food processor.
Storage
Store your energy balls in a sealed container in your fridge for up to 5 days.
Or use an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze them for up to 3 months.
Expert Tip
- I like to add a few extra chocolate chips to each ball as I’m rolling them to make them more appealing for my little ones, but this is completely optional.

📖 Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 15 ounce can black beans drained + rinsed (approx. 1.5 cups)
- ½ cup rolled oats
- 1 cup pitted dates packed
- ¼ cup raw unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼-1/3 cup vegan chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add everything to your food processor and process until mostly smooth and well combined.
- Then add the chocolate chips (if using) and pulse a few times to mix them through.
- Scoop the batter using a small cookie scoop and roll it into a ball. Place each chocolate bliss ball on a plate, baking sheet, or sheet of parchment paper. Repeat with the remaining batter. You will get around 30 energy balls.
Notes
- I like to add a few extra chocolate chips to each ball as I’m rolling them to make them more appealing for my little ones, but this is completely optional.
Suze
I’m wondering, could the oats be substituted with oat pulp left over from oat milk making?
Rosa
I haven’t tried that so I’m not sure, but it might make the balls stickier and more difficult to roll.
