Ingredients + Substitutions
Here’s everything you’ll need to make these tasty and wholesome mocha energy balls.
- Pecans: I love the combo of the pecan, chocolate and coffee flavour. But you may also use other nuts such as raw almonds, cashews, or walnuts.
- Cocoa powder: Use unsweetened to keep these bite-sized balls refined sugar-free.
- Dates: Use pitted dates or medjool dates and remove their pits.
- Instant coffee: Instant coffee granules add excellent flavour and are very easy to incorporate into the mixture. Espresso powder or ground coffee beans also work.
- Maple syrup: Adds a touch more sweetness and helps bind everything together. You may use other liquid sweeteners if preferred, such as honey or agave syrup.
Instructions
(This is a summary with step by step photos, full recipe measurements and instructions are in the recipe card below.)
- Add everything to your food processor.
- Blend until well combined and broken down.
Roll the mixture into balls and enjoy them straight away or refrigerate them for 1 hour or longer.
Variations
- Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract for peppermint mocha energy bites.
- Make vanilla mocha bites by adding 1-2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract.
- For extra nutty flavour add 1-2 tablespoons of your favourite nut butter. Cashew butter, almond butter, or walnut butter all work very well.
- Fill-ins: Try adding chia seeds, dark chocolate chips, shredded coconut, oats, a pinch of salt, or extra cacao powder for fun textures and flavours.
Equipment
I use this Cusinart food processor to make these energy balls.
You MAY use a blender if you don't have a food processor. However, removing the mixture from a food processor is easier if you have the option.
Storage
Chill the energy balls in your fridge for 1 hour before enjoying them to help them firm up.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 5 days.
To freeze, store the balls in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
Expert Tips
- Don't over-blend the mixture, as these snacks taste best with a little bit of texture.
- The batter is a little sticky, so use wet hands to roll the mixture into balls to prevent it from sticking to your hands.

Any substitutions for instant coffee? These look really good – I have all the ingredients but the instant coffee. I have whole bean coffee though. :/

Hi Amy, ground coffee beans also work. Enjoy! ๐
