Baked Crab Bites – Gluten Free

These baked crab bites are easy to make, and the perfect hors d’oeuvre or appetizer for your next gathering. These bites will definitely impress your guests and they’ll never guess how easy they are to make! So colourful and tasty, without the added fat from frying! All the delicious goodness, but baked instead of fried! Your guests will truly never know the difference!

Crab cakes are typically breaded and fried in oil to make a crispy patty. These bites use similar ingredients, but rather than breading, I use corn flakes. Making this a perfectly suitable choice for those with gluten intolerances. And rather than frying, I bake them in mini muffin pans. This helps control the size, making them perfect for appetizers. Plus it avoids the fried.

The corn flake crumbs make these bites deliciously crispy. The corn adds sweetness to an already savoury dish, for the perfect combo.

If you’re avoiding eggs, you may use flax eggs in replacement of the egg, and Vegenaise to replace the mayo.

I like serving my baked crab bites with this spicy Cayenne Dipping Sauce, to really add some kick to each bite! Feel free to opt for something a little more mild if preferred.

Oven baked crab bites are a crowd pleasing appetizer that taste great, and are easy to make for your next event or function.

  • 16 oz crab meat coarsely chopped (or imitation crab meat)
  • 1 cup corn flakes crushed
  • 1 red bell pepper finely chopped
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • 1 cup corn
  • 1/3 cup vegenaise divided (or regular mayo)
  • 1 flax egg or regular egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper


  • Prepare your flax egg and set aside, if using.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and grease your mini muffin pans, enough to make 36 bites.
  • Sprinkle half of the crushed corn flake crumbs into your muffin pans, making sure to coat the sides as well.
  • In a large bowl, combine the crab meat, pepper, green onion, corn, mayo, egg, remaining half of crushed corn flakes, salt and pepper.
  • Form the mixture into small balls and place in mini muffin pans. Bake for 10 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool 2-3 minutes before handling.
  • Serve with Cayenne Dipping Sauce or sauce of choice.
